FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?

A VPP is a network of distributed energy resources like solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles—that are digitally connected and coordinated to act like a single power plant. They help balance energy supply and demand while supporting the electricity grid.

How does a VPP work?

VPPs use software to monitor, control, and optimise the output and usage of energy devices. For example, your battery might charge during the day using excess solar power, then discharge in the evening when demand is high or when the grid needs support.

Do I need to install special equipment to join a VPP?

At a minimum you will need to have a 5.0 kWh solar system installed, a home battery, smart meter, and a stable WiFi connection. If you would like a free quotation, fill out the form here.

Will I still have power if the grid goes down?

Batteries can keep your power running during an outage if you have blackout protection (backup capability) installed. This feature allows your battery to supply power to your home when the grid is down. It can be an additional expense, but it’s worth considering, especially if you live in an area that’s prone to blackouts.

How much can I earn from a VPP?

Earnings vary depending on your system’s size, how much energy you can provide, and the specific VPP program.

*The Ongoing VPP Credits and all other credits with VPP Program, of any kind, are not transferable or redeemable as cash.

How do I benefit from being in a VPP?

You may receive financial rewards, such as bill credits or payments, for allowing your system to support the grid. You can also reduce your energy costs by using your power more efficiently.

Is it safe and secure?

Yes. VPP platforms use encrypted communication and adhere to industry standards to keep your data and devices secure.

Can I leave a VPP if I change my mind?

You can choose to exit the VPP at anytime, however depending on the plan you are on, a termination fee may apply. Call us on 1300 689 866 if you are unsure whether you are in a contract or not.

Can I monitor my usage and earnings through the VPP program?

Yes, you will have access to real time insights and earnings by being including in our VPP program.

How do I know if my battery is compatible with CovauU's VPP Program?

This list will be updated from time to time. If you don’t see your battery and would like to check their compatibility, email support@covau.com.au
